Opting to study in Canada or the UK has been a popular choice due to their longstanding reputation for quality education and top-tier universities. According to 2023 reports, Canada is expecting nearly 753,000 international students. Meanwhile, it is reported that the international student population in the UK rose to 680,000 in the 2021-22 academic year.

Both Canada and the UK offer diverse cultures, expansive landscapes, livability, and access to free healthcare, among other similarities. However, the decision to pursue a Master’s degree in either the UK or Canada hinges on several factors, including your field of study, cost, duration, and personal preferences.

Here are some aspects to consider:

1. EDUCATION QUALITY

The United Kingdom and Canada both host world-class universities that have achieved global recognition and offer a high standard of education.

United Kingdom
In the realm of university rankings, the UK has a distinct edge, with 4 of its universities appearing in the top 10 of the QS World University Rankings 2023. Renowned institutions such as the University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, and Imperial College London are internationally recognized for their educational offerings and research initiatives. The UK is home to over 100 public universities, 11 of which are ranked among the top 100 universities globally.

Canada
There are 90 universities in Canada, 30 of which have earned a place in global rankings. This includes prestigious institutions like the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia.

2. PROGRAM DURATION

United Kingdom
The majority of postgraduate programs typically span one (1) year.

Canada
The average duration of a postgraduate master’s degree is around two years.

So, you’re likely to be studying longer in Canada compared to the UK. This is an important factor to consider when choosing between the two countries for your Master’s degree.

3. COST OF STUDY

United Kingdom
The average tuition fee is around £13,000, which does not include accommodation and living expenses.

Canada
Obtaining an education at Canadian universities is often more economical. This is largely due to two main reasons: the tuition fees in Canada are typically lower than those in the UK, and the exchange rate for the Canadian dollar is less compared to other currencies. However, it’s worth noting that the duration of study in Canada is generally longer than in the UK.

4. EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Compared to the U.K., Canada offers superior opportunities in many industries for career growth and employment. Furthermore, Canada provides an abundance of job opportunities to its residents, both full-time and part-time. The unemployment rate in Canada is currently at its lowest since 2020.

5. POST-STUDY WORK VISA

United Kigdom
The UK Home Office introduced a post-study work visa (Graduate route visa) for international students. This allows individuals who have obtained a degree in the UK to stay and seek employment for a minimum of two years.

Canada
International students in Canada can extend their stay for an additional three years after graduation by applying for a post-graduation work visa. This permit allows you to remain and work in any industry or field.

6. PERMANENT RESIDENCE (PR) OPPORTUNITIES

United Kingdom
By applying for Permanent Residence (PR), you can reside and work in the UK indefinitely, free from restrictions and time constraints. The likelihood of your PR application being accepted increases if:

• You have resided in the UK for the previous 5 years.
• You have been living in the UK for the past 5 years on a Tier 2 (General) work visa. In this case, however, your employer must sponsor you.

Canada
Obtaining PR in Canada is relatively straightforward and flexible. International students can apply for PR under the Canadian Experience Class while on a Canadian post-graduation visa. Due to its sparse population and shortage of skilled labor, Canada is promoting its PR program to attract more immigrants to study, work, and live in the country.

CONCLUSION
Ultimately, the decision should be based on your personal goals, financial situation, and the specific program you’re interested in. Both countries offer high-quality education and a great international student experience.
